New Year, Same Me?

As we begin the new year and decade, many people will reflect upon the past and start setting resolutions for the new year.


But is that really effective?


Not really…


According to the Forbes, apparently only about 8% of people actually stick to their resolutions to completion each year. So if you’re a part of that 8% good for you! (My sisters when they gave up pop in 2008… #proud)


So what is effective?


Continuous constant check-ins with yourself. Set daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, AND yearly goals/intentions.


Here’s a lie:

“I decided to start eating healthier on January 1st, 2012. I was so disciplined, never ate one scoop of ice cream, and BAM all my problems went away!”


Here’s the truth:

“Every single day I made choices. I set intentions for the year, the month, and/or the week. These intentions helped guide my decisions most days but not all. Every day was different. Some days I was very disciplined. Some days Jeni’s ice cream needed to happen. (Jeni’s is good for my soul so technically it’s healthy right? #notanAd) One day I learned I have Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism and I should avoid gluten to help my condition. I avoided it for a few months then caved. I felt terrible. I then decided it was going to be eliminated forever. One day I decided I no longer wanted to deal with back pain. I bought a groupon for yoga and had to go at least once a week to get my money’s worth. I didn’t keep going because it felt good. I kept going because I spent money on it. But then it felt good. Now I can’t go a week without it.”


These were just TWO of the examples of lifestyle changes I’ve made over years! Both of these took me months to incorporate and now I avoid gluten like the plague and yoga has become my religion.

Lifestyle changes take time.


We must make small changes regularly for sustainable outcomes and this journey of evolving is never ending! As far as I’ve come on my health and wellness journey, there is still so much more to do!


I like to set a specific intention each year. 2019’s intention was to embrace failure/rejection. However, setting goals/intentions more incrementally is the way I can make real changes in my life for long term health and wellness.


This new year/decade is NOT a new me. It’s a continuously evolving me!


Cheers to every day being a new day! Cheers to tomorrow! Cheers to 2020!
